The casting director for a new feature film being shot in the region says she’s hoping to fill a few major roles with local talent when she visits Nelson September 5 and 6.
Carmen Kotyk says she’s looking for actors to fill about 25 speaking roles in The Tall Man, which begins filming in Nelson, Salmo and Sandon September 20. Former 7th Heaven actress Jessica Biel is set to star in the picture as a doctor who arrives in the fictional town of Cold Rock just as the local children begin to go missing.
“There’s townsfolk, there’s people who have had their kids abducted,” says Kotyk of the roles she’s hoping to fill. “I’m looking for prison guards, some of the sheriff’s department and deputies.”
While some parts will involve little dialogue, Kotyk says a few of the vacant roles are for principle characters who have at least a half-dozen lines of dialogue.
Also up for grabs are a few major children’s roles, which could land young Nelsonites some extra time on the big screen.
“It would be a miracle if I could find David in Nelson,” says Kotyk. “He’s a five year-old boy who has a huge role in the picture and I still haven’t found him… Tiffany, the seven-year-old girl, she also has quite a bit of dialogue, and I’d love to find her in Nelson as well.”
Kotyk says experience isn’t a requirement to audition for any of the roles, and she’s willing to audition children as young as four-years-old and as old as six for the part of David.
“I don’t care if they have experience,” she adds. “[David] does need to be caucasian, and they just need to be really natural.”
Because the town of Cold Rock is meant to be run down and at the end of its industrial life, Kotyk says she’s going to be looking for actors who “aren’t quite as polished as Hollywood types.”
“We want people with big noses or no teeth or lots of lines on their faces,” she adds. “People that look like they’ve lived in their faces for a while.”
In addition to speaking roles, more that 100 extras are also required for the film.
The Nelson casting sessions run 3 to 9 p.m. September 5 and 6 at the North Shore Hall, and are open to people of all ages and ethnicities. Another session is set for the Salmo Valley Youth and Community Centre from 3 to 9 p.m. September 7.
Though exact dates haven’t been released, filming for The Tall Man is expected to run until late November.

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that Ruthless! – The Musical may possibly be headed back to the stage in a new production, if a reading scheduled for September goes well as directed by Jason Moore and produced by Darren Bagert. A casting call has been issued for the lead role of the ‘bad seed’ child-showbiz terror – Tina. As no other parts are available for casting and the week’s workshop is scheduled to begin shortly, one wonders who might already be cast.
Last year, there was early talk of this being Jessica Biel’s dream role, since she and her company tried to secure the film rights for the piece, which Biel remembered seeing on the stage early in her career. Jessica Biel made her stage debut at the Hollywood Bowl opposite Brian Stokes Mitchell in Guys & Dolls. This also seems possible, because when Jessica Biel’s name was not announced with the complete cast for David Yazbeck’s new musical, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (after doing the show’s 2 workshops), it could very well be because she has her eye on this project.
Ruthless! was written by Joel Paley, with music by Bernadette Peters’ long time musical director / conductor, Marvin Laird.
This aggressively outrageous musical hit garnered rave reviews during its long, original Off-Broadway run, which opened in 1992 with Laura Bell Bundy in its title role (interestingly, Natalie Portman and Britney Spears were understudies during the run) alongside Donna English as the mother, Judy Denmark (which would be Biel’s role).
Off-Broadway, it was quite a campy affair so it’ll be interesting to watch what the approach is for Broadway. The story in a nutshell: Eight year old Tina Denmark knows she was born to play Pippi Longstocking and she will do ANYTHING to win the part in her school musical. Anything includes … murdering the leading lady (a kid)!
BroadwayWorld.com will keep you posted as details fall into place, as this is yet another small, Off-Broadway musical trying to find its way to the Great White Way a la Little Shop or Horrors, Steel Magnolias, Avenue Q, Spring Awakening and many others.
