A week after Hollywood’s golden girl Reese Witherspoon starts shooting her romantic comedy This Means War (alongside Star Trek actor Chris Pine and Inception’s Tom Hardy), actress Jessica Biel will return to B.C. to star in The Tall Man.
Biel, who was in Vancouver last fall filming the action flick The A-Team, has been cast as the lead role in the psychological thriller that will shoot mainly in and around Nelson.
According to Cold Rock Productions, the film is still in the process of finalizing details. The movie does not pop up on IMDB yet, leaving the plot synopsis and supporting cast details a mystery.
However, a few blogs and websites say the film has a $15-million budget and is about
a mother (played by Biel) who tracks a mysterious figure known as “The Tall Man” who has kidnapped her child.
The film’s production office did confirm that the movie will mark French director Pascal Laugier’s English-language debut. They also said the film will involve a lot of night shooting. Biel is involved with on-again-off-again boyfriend Justin Timberlake, so keep your eyes peeled for a visit from the pop singer.
The Tall Man is scheduled to film from Sept. 20 until Nov. 19.

The casting director for a new feature film being shot in the region says she’s hoping to fill a few major roles with local talent when she visits Nelson September 5 and 6.
Carmen Kotyk says she’s looking for actors to fill about 25 speaking roles in The Tall Man, which begins filming in Nelson, Salmo and Sandon September 20. Former 7th Heaven actress Jessica Biel is set to star in the picture as a doctor who arrives in the fictional town of Cold Rock just as the local children begin to go missing.
“There’s townsfolk, there’s people who have had their kids abducted,” says Kotyk of the roles she’s hoping to fill. “I’m looking for prison guards, some of the sheriff’s department and deputies.”
While some parts will involve little dialogue, Kotyk says a few of the vacant roles are for principle characters who have at least a half-dozen lines of dialogue.
Also up for grabs are a few major children’s roles, which could land young Nelsonites some extra time on the big screen.
“It would be a miracle if I could find David in Nelson,” says Kotyk. “He’s a five year-old boy who has a huge role in the picture and I still haven’t found him… Tiffany, the seven-year-old girl, she also has quite a bit of dialogue, and I’d love to find her in Nelson as well.”
Kotyk says experience isn’t a requirement to audition for any of the roles, and she’s willing to audition children as young as four-years-old and as old as six for the part of David.
“I don’t care if they have experience,” she adds. “[David] does need to be caucasian, and they just need to be really natural.”
Because the town of Cold Rock is meant to be run down and at the end of its industrial life, Kotyk says she’s going to be looking for actors who “aren’t quite as polished as Hollywood types.”
“We want people with big noses or no teeth or lots of lines on their faces,” she adds. “People that look like they’ve lived in their faces for a while.”
In addition to speaking roles, more that 100 extras are also required for the film.
The Nelson casting sessions run 3 to 9 p.m. September 5 and 6 at the North Shore Hall, and are open to people of all ages and ethnicities. Another session is set for the Salmo Valley Youth and Community Centre from 3 to 9 p.m. September 7.
Though exact dates haven’t been released, filming for The Tall Man is expected to run until late November.

Jessica Biel will star in The Tall Man, a film to be financed by France’s SND. French director Pascal Laugier will make his English-language debut with the project.
The film is the second English-language project from SND which will also release in France and handle international sales. Budget is $15m with shooting to start in Vancouver in September.
Tall Man is a suspenseful thriller in the vein of the early films of M. Night Shyamalan, SND’s Lionel Uzan tells Screen. Biel plays a woman who must grapple with and track the mysterious figure of The Tall Man who has kidnapped her child.
Laugier, who also wrote the film, says “I like to think of The Tall Man as a sort of Panic Room… outside! It is a ‘woman in jeopardy’ movie with a lot of twists and a strong female character that you feel very connected to.”
Tall Man is produced by Clement Miserez, (Radar Films) and Steven Schneider (Room 101 Inc.). Jean-Charles Levy and Bonnie Timmermann will also serve as executive producers.
Biel is repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Karl Austen of Jackoway, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Austen, Mandelbaum, Morris and Klein.
Laugier is represented by WME and Austen.
